Partial Closure of Border with Colombia Begins Monday to Counter Smuggling

Scheduled closings of Venezuela’s border with Colombia will begin Monday night from 10 p.m. until 5 a.m.  The border will be closed nightly in order to strengthen policies aimed at counter smuggling from Venezuela to Colombia.

Furthermore, all forms of cargo transport will be restricted from 6 p.m. to 5 a.m. to help stem the tide of fuel and food contraband.

On Saturday, the head of the Strategic Operational Command of the Bolivarian National Armed Force (Ceofanb), Vladimir Padrino López, added that it was “a closure of the entire border, of the 2,200 kilometers that form the border between Venezuela and Colombia.”  He noted that the measures will be applied daily.

Padrino also said that additional measures to fight contraband will be implemented following the meeting the Venezuelan President Nicolás Maduro held with Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos last week.

“These measures will be increased as of that bilateral meeting … and they will be managed by the Binational Center for Command and Control in the struggle to fight smuggling, with offices in Cúcuta, Colombia and another in San Cristóbal, Venezuela,” he explained.
