President Maduro to Participate in CELAC Summit

Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro arrived in Havana on Sunday night in order to participate in the second Summit of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States.

Shortly before midnight, he was received along with his wife Cilia Flores by Cuban Education Minister Rodolfo Alarcón.

"We have come to modestly and humbly offer the contributions of the Bolivarian Government and the people of Venezuela at this great step forward that we will make on January 28 and 29 here in Havana consolidate the path of the Community of Latin American and Caribbean States," he said upon arrival at José Martí Airport.

In recent days, the president suggested he will propose declaring Latin America and the Caribbean a territory free from colonialism, saying "it is a shame that in the 21st century, there are still colonies in Latin America and the Caribbean.”

The proposed including Puerto Rico in the group.

"This Puerto Rico an integral part of the history of the United States, and an Anglo-Saxon people, or is it an integral part of the history of Latin America and the Caribbean? Where does Puerto Rico belong? As part of our Americas," he said speaking at a special form on Puerto Rico last Wednesday.

Already present in Cuba to attend the summit are Bolivian President Evo Morales, Argentine President Cristina Kirchner, Haitian President Michel Martelly, and Brazilian President Dilma Rousseff.
