Venezuela's Primary School Enrollment at 93%

According to a report from the Ministry of People’s Power for Education, the net enrollment rate for primary school in Venezuela reached 93% in 2013, which represents an 8 point gain over levels reached before the Bolivarian Revolution.

Data in the report show that in the 90’s, primary school enrollment averaged 85% and the dropout rate was 5% during a time when the government did not prioritize education and considered it spending rather than investment.

The report notes that in that last decade of representative democracy, the school enrollment rate fell by four percentage points.

In contrast, during 14 years of revolution and participatory democracy, the Bolivarian government has made increasing the enrollment rate and assuring that people complete their studies priorities.  In 2013, the government reaffirmed its commitment to granting universal access to education and took steps to ensure that the education system grows in tandem with the population.

According to the Education Ministry, during the revolution enrollment has gone up while the dropout rate has gone down.

Between the 2011-12 and 2012-13 school years, the enrollment rate went up by 2 percentage points while the dropout rate went down by 1.5 points, a full 3.5 points lower when compared to the previous government.

The revolution has also led to increases in middle school enrollment (by 32 percentage points) and net pre-school enrollment (34 points).

“Pre-school (3 to 5 years) rose 34 percentage points in its net rate, going from 43% in 1998-99 to 77% in 2012-13”, the report states.

It also notes that the Bolivarian Revolution has led to an increase in overall enrollment (pre-school, primary school and middle school) of 29% in Venezuela, leading to the guarantee of free, quality education.  In the 2012-13 school year, Venezuela had over 7.8 million students in its school system.
