Proposal by President Nicolas Maduro: Over 71% of Venezuelans Support Enabling Law to Fight Corruption

According to a recent poll by International Consulting Services, 71.5% of Venezuelans support the proposal of President Nicolas Maduro to seek approval from lawmakers for special powers – called an “enabling law” – to take measures to fight corruption. The poll was conducted among a sample of 1,600 people nationwide on August 24 and 25.

If approved by the National Assembly, the law would enable the President to make decree-laws regarding issues he determines in accordance with the needs of the country.

Of those surveyed, 65.9% said they enabling law is needed to establish specific norms for the government’s fight against corruption.

The survey was presented in a program by the Venezuelan journalist José Vicente Rangel on the privately owned television channel Televen.

According to its findings, 58.9% of those consulted believe that President Maduro is an honest man. Meanwhile, 75.9% said they are satisfied with the measures undertaken by the government against those public servants involved in corruption, while 18.2% said they are unsatisfied.

Another issue touched on was that of the sectors in which people believe the greatest corruption exists. A total of 25.7% of those consulted answered that governors from opposition parties were the most corrupt in the country.
