Sandoval Hits Three Home Runs in World Series Opener

Venezuelan members of the San Francisco Giants and the Detroit Tigers looked strong in the World Series opener last night, but it was Pablo Sandoval who made history, becoming the fourth player ever to hit three home runs in the fall classic.

Sandoval, the Giants slugger who also goes by “Kung Fu Panda,” was central to the Giants’ 8-3 win, getting home runs in each of his first three appearances at bat and a single in the seventh inning. According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the only other players in history to have made three home runs in a World Series game are Babe Ruth, Reggie Jackson, and Alberto Pujols.

Sandoval already has six home runs in the postseason.

The Giants enjoyed a home-field advantage and were fresh off their National League Championship win Monday night, for which Venezuela’s Marco Scutaro was the MVP. He continued to look strong last night, finishing his first World Series game 2-for-4 with 2 RBI.

Three more Venezuelans filled out the Giants’ roster: Gregor Blanco, Hector Sanchez and José Mijares.

Giants pitcher Barry Zito prevented the Tigers from scoring any points until the sixth inning, when Venezuelan Triple Crown-winner Miguel Cabrera hit a single that drove in one run. A home run by the Dominican-born Jhonny Peralta earned two more runs for the Tigers in the ninth inning, but they were unable to recover.

Three more Venezuelans play for the Tigers: Anibal Sanchez, Omar Infante, and Avisail Garcia.

The teams face off again tonight in San Francisco for the second game of the series.
