In Venezuela, 135 Candidates Will Vie for Governor on Dec. 16

In Venezuela’s regional elections this December 16, 135 candidates will vie for governor of the country’s 23 states, while 237 candidates – including eight indigenous representatives – are running for seats in Regional Legislative Councils.

The numbers were announced yesterday by Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE) when it presented the final roster of candidacies.

In total, the CNE received 9,357 separate nominations for governors and legislators from 56 different political organizations, though many were for the same candidate.

The CNE and representatives from seven political parties met yesterday at the Central University of Venezuela’s chemistry department to test the indelible ink that will be used for during the elections.

The political party representatives dipped their fingers in the ink and confirmed that it was impossible to wash off with 15 different types of soap, and thus would prevent voters from voting more than once.

Participating were the following representatives: Vicente Bello of Un Nuevo Tiempo, Aníbal Sánchez of COPEI, Oscar Martínez of the United Socialist Party of Venezuela, Peter Bogestis of Movimiento al Socialismo, Miró Vladimir of Patria Para Todos, and Enrique Martínez of Causa R.
