Venezuelan Diplomatic Offices Abroad Ready for Sunday's Elections

This Sunday, presidential elections will be held in the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela, and the country’s diplomatic offices worldwide are ready to receive the 100,495 registered voters living abroad that will exercise their right to vote.

The number of Venezuelans registered to vote abroad is equivalent to 0.53 percent of the country’s total electorate, and 36.73 percent of that amount – 36,915 people – are in the United States.

Venezuela has eight consular offices in the United States, and those expecting the most voters in Sunday’s election are New Orleans (19,416 voters), Houston (6,030), and New York (3,446). Slightly less are expected in Washington, DC (2,189), San Francisco (1,720), Chicago (1,600), Boston (1,333) and Puerto Rico (1,181).

To exercise their right to vote abroad, Venezuelans over 18 years of age must be registered in the Electoral Roll and appear in the registry of the diplomatic or consular office of their jurisdiction. After their registration is verified, the only document needed to vote is a laminated Venezuelan i.d. card known as the cédula de identidad, which will be accepted whether or not it has expired. The manual voting system will be used at the diplomatic and consular offices.

This Sunday, voting begins after the voting tables have been assembled and will occur continuously from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. local time at each diplomatic or consular office, unless there are voters still waiting to exercise their right to vote.

At a press conference last Monday, the president of Venezuela’s National Electoral Council (CNE), Tibisay Lucena, said that the voting will be witnessed by 3,435 national observers and 245 international accompaniers.
